I wonder what the current buy gold prices are anyway and if they compare?! Hijack heavenly style! Break the chains of convention and cause a riot of menacing mayhem wearing the aching allure of Roberto Cavalli™! Metallic leather upper. Open toe. Adjustable ankle strap closure. Chains drape down vamp. Leather lining and insole. Leather sole. Made in Italy. 3 1/2″ heel.
Poor Patrick Barkham. He had to buy used underwear. Oh, wait, no actually, he didn’t. When I first saw “ Secondhand Pants, Anyone? ” in the Guardian I assumed it was about how economic need had driven someone to buy thrift store underwear. I was tricked by this tagline: “Would you wear secondhand underwear? For one man, needs must .” And for a moment I thought, “damn, that poor guy, I hope the Guardian paid him well for this article.” Because, if you’re a writer in New York, you’ve either been in a situation, or known someone in a situation where there literally hasn’t been enough money left over at the end of the month for a new pack of Hanes. It happens. Then I realized that this was actually some sort of saving the planet/ getting a book deal thing, and it made me want to go out and eat a side of veal while driving an SVU. Patrick explains: “At the start of this year I promised not to buy any new clothes for 12 months. This was the frivolous bit of my personal commitment to cut my carbon emissions by 10% for the 10:10 campaign. I skipped past early temptations with ease and the only time I have felt the tug of new-thread desire was passing a particularly lovely new jumper.” Of course it’s the – ha, ha! – frivolous part. As opposed to one of those necessities of life. Now, look, here’s an idea – why don’t you cut down on buying new clothes? Or try to buy clothes from green fashion designers (here are 20 of them ). Or basically, try to work about bettering the planet in a way where it’s not just a shameless attention grabbing ploy to promote yourself? Maybe, even, a way that it would be good for regular people to know about? Still, hell, there are lots of people who do crazy stunt pieces to get book deals (I really enjoyed The Year of Living Biblically) so that, in itself, isn’t really that big a deal. But there’s something about the preachy, self sacrificing tone of the rest of the piece that makes me feel that he maybe didn’t understand that, for some people out there, having to buy terrible secondhand clothing isn’t just this wild wacky whim. Everyone I have told about my purchase has been disgusted. Did you wash them? No. They were cleaned with MustyCharityShopPowder. What about infections? Yeah, that’s why people with sufficient economic reserves don’t buy used underwear, you idiot. Wearing a bit of cotton that’s been up someone else’s butt is a last resort move. Have you thrown them away? No, that would be as wasteful as buying new ones…I don’t expect any green garlands for this gesture. I felt embarrassed buying them and they will remain in a box, marked “Emergency pants only”. But perhaps our revulsion over reusing a bit of cotton is as excessive as our need to constantly clothe ourselves in new creations . But you do kind of expect a green garland for it, don’t you? Because you suffered. You suffered in a completely voluntary, attention grabbing, pointedly provocative if ultimately pointless way that will ultimately benefit no one. You poor baby. Did it seriously not occur to you as you wandered through this dodgy shops you went to that there really are people who actually have to go there? No. Guess not. I’m just going to copy down the Butler’s speech from Sullivan’s Travels now. Butler: The poor know all about poverty and only the morbid rich would find the topic glamorous. Sullivan: But I’m doing it for the poor. Don’t you understand? Butler: I doubt if they would appreciate it, sir. They rather resent the invasion of their privacy…I believe quite properly, sir. Also, such excursions can be extremely dangerous, sir…You see, sir, rich people and theorists, who are usually rich people, think of poverty in the negative, as the lack of riches, as disease might be called the lack of health, but it isn’t, sir. Poverty is not the lack of anything, but a positive plague, virulent in itself, contagious as cholera, with Filth, Criminality, Vice and Despair as only a few of its symptoms. It is to be stayed away from, even for purposes of study. It is to be shunned. Sullivan: Well, you seem to have made quite a study of it. Butler: Quite unwillingly, sir. Will that be all, sir? Patrick, I’d suggest you go rent it, but I am 90% certain that you are the kind of person that proudly states that you don’t own a television . So I’ll just sit here thinking about what an ass (albeit, a covered ass) you really are. Post from: TheGloss

Now that the biggest mama of Fashion Weeks, Paris, is over, I thought I’d review some of the Parisian footcandy. The shoes in Paris seemed to fall into one of two categories: boring boots or impossibly weird abstraction/comical portrayals. These photos are via nymag.com since I was sadly not there to witness Paris. What is up with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s critter kookers? Hussein Chalayan, meanwhile, gave us grandma-on-acid legwear with men’s shoes. Etrange! The legwear matched the neckwear. Do you remember ER, Endoplasmic Reticulum, from freshman biology? That’s what this stuff looks like to me. Where are the ribosomes? Is this organelle going to swallow us whole? At Givenchy, red, black and laceups with hexagonal buttons were the rage. Some of these boots were pretty but with so much red? Red pants and red tights with red shoes seems a bit much, especially in this shade. At Gaultier, weird, gauche Asian-influenced style ruled. Sure, the Chinese slipper with ballet lacings inside the platform is innovative, but the colors are so outlandish and the shapes are such an eyesore, I cringed all the way through looking at these. And what modern woman really wants to look like a raver candy-colored geisha/elf on acid? We see what you are going for here, Gaultier, and we just want to let you know that you need to go back to the drawing board and erase some of the cheese. It looks like you stole your fabric from the discount bin at Chinatown’s worst shop and threw some sweatpants made from dishtowels on over dollar store tights. Some of the others at Gaultier weren’t QUITE as appalling but were still generally a tad bit frightening, especially when combined with horridly ugly pants meant to show off the socks and shoes. Have we noticed that every single model’s feet are too big for the shoes? Inside the closed-toe shoes, the models’ toes must be aching! I heard that a lot of these ubertall models wear size 10 or 11 shoes! No wonder they can’t find shoes their size! Chloe didn’t show us any love with weird bootie boots emblazoned with their name. Nothing to be proud about, these horsey moonboots. Miu Miu did something playful but doubtful in its show. It looks like Minnie Mouse’s ears and bow have been folded over this foot! This is too hot for summer and will get wet in winter. Perhaps with a different fabric like leather? Sonia Rykiel to the rescue. She had at least one lovely pair of shoes, though they weren’t avant-garde in any way and should’ve been a larger size for this model, whose heel sticks out awkwardly. Why can’t her Target collection have shoes like this instead of just weird stripey clown sweaters no fashion-loving Frenchwoman would ever wear? She also had some kooky jewels on some ugly shoes (which, although they were the same shape as the above beauties, seem to be horribly and quickly made, with wrinkles and uneven stitches). Maybe next time we’ll see some things that strike wonder and fancy with their innovation instead of just strangeness and confusion. Until the spring shows!
I know I did a Paris Week recap, but I wanted to show you Hermes. It is interesting that Jean Paul Gaultier can feature some of the most bizarre shoes and clothing for his own line, but his Hermes collection was completely wearable. Jean Paul Gaultier with Lily Cole. It had a 60’s Avengers look complete with furled umbrella, bowler hats and lots of leather. Love it. I am a natural redhead who looks great in brown, tangerine and rust. When I saw this outfit I started making a mental list of how I could re-create this look for myself. It is smashing. Here are the shoes Gaultier put with these outfits. I saved the best for last. How gorgeous are these boots. I would wear these every day if I owned them. (Images Style.com ) Authentic Shops: Designer Shoes at Zappos.com Saks Fifth Avenue

Product paqit towelettes for the face + hands + body Price: $27 for a set of 24 towelettes Review Haiku (If You Don’t Want to Read the Whole Post) organic, fancy moist paqit towelettes Not worth the money. First things first: It’s paqit as in ‘pack it.’ paqit is written in lowercase letters with the i slightly raised, and their product description is, “Naturally fresh products that renew and invigorate the active person after and during long days at the office, energy-sapping flights and rigorous workouts.” (This is code for: fancy-schmancy organic beauty products.) paqit’s current focus is on their body care line, which consists of biodegradable towelettes for the face, hands and body. Each towelette is individually packaged and designed to “rejuvenate in a moment.” Considering it usually takes me anywhere from one to several days to rejuvenate, the idea of doing so in the brief interval of a moment sounded great to me. paqit’s success story begins with its branding. From the quirky name and logo to the modern-looking turquoise, silver and grass green packaging, paqit scored big points on my aesthete-o-meter. You can even use paqit as a verb, as in, “We paqit after yoga.” I instantly wanted to reinvigorate my body and cleanse my face as the label suggested. I never cared about organic, biodegradable moist towelettes before, but suddenly they seemed like a very important addition to my day-to-day regimen. I decided to start with my face, i.e., the yuzu-scented towelette. The individual package was easy to open and the towelette smelled freakin’ amazing, like very fragrant semi-sour citrus. I used it all over my face and neck, and then I tossed it into my backyard compost pile. Just kidding – I live in Brooklyn and don’t have a yard to speak of, but I did toss it in the recycling bin. The only thing that slightly sucked about the yuzu towelette experience was that I absolutely had to wash my hands afterward. They felt sticky, the way they would after eating an orange. At home, washing my hands wasn’t a problem, but if I was traveling it wouldn’t exactly be ideal. I was concerned the yuzu would make my face and neck feel sticky, too, but thankfully that wasn’t the case after they had thoroughly dried. Moving onto the bergamot, I had high expectations. This towelette is for your body and your hands, so I hoped I wouldn’t feel compelled to wash anything afterwards. Sadly, this wasn’t the case. There is no way I would want to touch a cell phone, steering wheel or keyboard without at least rinsing and drying my hands after using the bergamot towelette. Still, it smelled incredible and I caught myself sniffing my arm a few times to further inhale the scent (good thing I wasn’t in public). If that’s not a testament to a product’s quality, I don’t know what is. I suppose after trying the paqit towelettes I could see myself using them from time to time. But at $27 per recycled box of 24 individual towelettes (12 yuzu; 12 bergamot), it’d be hard to convince me of their daily necessity. I would recommend keeping a box at work for a quick shot of sweet-smelling citrus in the middle of the day, but I doubt I’d break ‘em out in rush hour traffic or in an airplane because you run the risk of feeling sticky. I also can’t say I felt totally rejuvenated or that my life was changed after using the serviettes rafraîchissantes by paqit, but I did feel fancy when I used them, and it’s pretty hard to put a price on that.
Remember how much Elaine adored her favorite kind of birth control, the sponge, on Seinfeld , even going so far as to buy up an entire store’s supply when she heard that the product was going to be discontinued? Well, that’s how I feel about the NuvaRing . It started when I became the first person at my university to get on the ring when it was approved by the FDA. A friend of mine who worked as a sex ed teacher had been on the clinical trials and couldn’t stop raving about it. When I needed to get on a regular form of contraception, the ring appealed to me immediately. I knew I couldn’t trust myself with the pill when I couldn’t even remember to take a vitamin every day. The shot seemed like too much of a commitment. I have sensitive skin, so I didn’t want to try the patch. So, the ring it was. I got pretty lucky finding the perfect contraceptive for me on my first try, but I know it’s not the one for everybody. Here are some of the questions that my friends normally ask me when I go on a the-ring-is-the-best tangent: Does it ever, like, fall out? It did. The first month I used it it probably fell out five times. But you get the hang of it. Now, I totally forget I have it’s there. If it wasn’t for my email alerts I would forget to take it out. As you can see in this picture, the ring isn’t that big. Plus it’s made of this super-bendy material, so you can just kind of fold it up. Do you feel weird about having to touch yourself? I’m touching myself, but I’m not “touching myself.” That’s such a masturbation euphemism, and that’s not really something I associate with putting my ring in. I mean, if you’re too scared to touch your own vagina twice a month (to put the ring in and then take it out), why are you having sex with someone who, presumably, touches your vagina? Can your partner feel it? Yeah. It doesn’t get in the way or anything, but it’s there. I decided to ask the person I have sex with. His exact quote was “It’s better than condoms, but I wish sometimes she would take the pill.” But I guess he decided at some point that noticing my ring every now and then was better than us never having sex again, so whatevs. And it hasn’t negatively affected either of our abilities to enjoy sex. However… if that dude birth control pill goes on the market, we can definitely renegotiate. Post from: TheGloss

There is something every year in Las Vegas called the ShoWest Awards. It is an event where a bunch of movie theater owners give awards to movie stars to thank them for, like, earning them a lot of money. The celebrities show up wearing fancy outfits and then give speeches. However, these speeches are not televised, which makes me think they are like trees falling in the woods – does anyone hear them? Do they make a sound? Cynthia Nixon was there, alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis (but not Kim Cattrall, which means omgdramaomg!!1!) to accept an “Ensemble” award for Sex and the City 2, which has not even premiered yet. It’s like a psychic award! Sadly, Cynthia Nixon was not a psychic when she selected this LBD to wear. The design at the top of the dress is like a cross between a cubist interpretation of a four leaf clover (perhaps a belated St. Patrick’s Day shoutout?) those marks you make with a fork on butterscotch cookies, and a busted fleur-de-lis. Instead of looking breezy and modern, the dress is just kind of blah, and the slits don’t do anything to make the dress more interesting. That said, Cynthia Nixon is pretty awesome otherwise. So I’m just going to assume that she cares way less about dressing for industry ass-kiss events and more about, like, marriage equality . And I really want some butterscotch cookies.
Manolo says, it is Tuesday, time to see what the Manolo is… Watching… Reading… Listening to… It is nearly St. Patrick’s Day, with all that means for people who like to drink too much green beer, listen to diddly-diddly fiddle music, fist fight with the authorities, and pretend to weep about the “auld sod”. In short, it is time to drink and think romantically about the Irish. And yet, strangely, attempts to anti-romanticize the Irish experience are even more compellingly romantic than the old-fashioned Emerald Isle blather. Shane MacGowan, Martin McDonagh, and even those insufferable frauds, the McCourt brothers, describe the Irish condition in horrific and unpleasant terms. And yet we lap it all up and continue to schedule our Dublin vacations. Very curious, no? Of the course, the Manolo, although not the least bit Irish, is as guilty as the rest, and completely enjoys the Pogues and the McDonagh plays and all of that (although he would happily push the entire McCourt tribe into the ocean), even as he wonders about what it all means. What is one to do when saddled with the contradictory desires for authenticity and entertainment? P.S. If Darby O’Gill = Uncle Remus for Irish People, then the Pogues = N.W.A. for Irish People. Discuss amongst yourselves.
