I just flew back from New York City, and boy are my arms tired (that joke never gets old, just lame). I saw a ton of fabulous shoes while in the Big Apple and will try to upload as many of them as possible (that I took pictures of), as soon as I catch up (on sleep mainly). Alternatives to Sky High Shoes
I was goofing around online the other day and saw a photo of a young celebrity nearly trip while wearing platform pumps. She didn’t end up on her kiester, but it was close. I was reminded of an event that happened several years ago, but have never forgotten it. I didn’t tell anyone, not even Mr. R5, because it was so embarrassing. I was in a pair of 4.5 inch platforms. The weather had turned windy and rainy and I struggled to open a door that was being blown shut by the wind. I rushed into the building, and the door slammed behind me, throwing me off balance. My wet stilettos hit the marble floor, I skittered across that lobby, going through all sorts of contortions, goofed my knee and broke one of the d#mn heels off. BUT I didn’t fall. It was quite an acomplishment, but there is no way it can be done with aplomb. When I look at some of these 5.5 and 6 inch, double and triple platform shoes, with the heel being no more substantial than a pencil, the phrase that comes to mind is, “these are an ankle waiting to break.” I don’t know, maybe I am too cautious, maybe I realize that fifty year old bones don’t heal like they used to, or maybe I am just grouchy. I find myself wearing more wedges, chunkier heels and a lower heel to toe ratio because the stability is greater. While there were still extreme heels, we saw LOTs of kitten heels on last season’s runway. Let’s look at some wedges and low heels that will keep me from falling flat on my rump. They are a little high for my everyday needs, but are they wonderful or what. I saw this boot in Phoenix, and all I wanted to do is touch it. The salesguy kept giving me the stink eye. Where did Louise Roe get those platforms?
US TV presenter Louise Roe wore some interesting creations to the CBS summer party in Los Angeles last night; a seriously dressed-up event with the likes of Ashley Tisdale, AnnaLynne McCord and Shenae Grimes in attendance. WhileTisdale and others went for the relatively ’safe’ option of Louboutin heels, Roe (also a fashion journalist, so we assume she knows what she’s doing!) rocked up in these unusual looking platforms.

Floral platform shoes from Miss Selfridge
Miss Selfridge have jumped on the floral bandwagon with gusto, embracing pretty floral tea dresses, floral corsages and, as beautifully demonstrated on the left, vintage floral heels. These platform heels have more than a whiff of 70s chic about them. The chunky heel balances out the oversized bow that adorns several of their current styles. The style also comes in a black and white polka dot pattern, and both styles are a bargain at £49.
Kurt Geiger ‘Kinetic’ platforms in khaki
If you’re looking for that perfect middle ground between heel height, ankle support and wearability, these strapping platforms from Kurt Geiger could just be for you. They’re certainly tall: five-and-a-half inches high, in fact, but we’re liking the look of that thick, secure strap with its double buckle at the top. And being made by our old favourite KG, we’ll take it on trust that the shoes are well made enough to take our active feet!
