Alternatives to Sky High Shoes

I was goofing around online the other day and saw a photo of a young celebrity nearly trip while wearing platform pumps.  She didn’t end up on her kiester, but it was close.  I was reminded of an event that happened several years ago, but have never forgotten it.  I didn’t tell anyone, not even Mr. R5, because it was so embarrassing. I was in a pair of 4.5 inch platforms. The weather had turned windy and rainy and I struggled to open a door that was being blown shut by the wind.  I rushed into the building, and the door slammed behind me, throwing me off balance.  My wet stilettos hit the marble floor, I skittered across that lobby, going through all sorts of contortions, goofed my knee and broke one of the d#mn heels off.  BUT I didn’t fall.  It was quite an acomplishment, but there is no way it can be done with aplomb.  When I look at some of these 5.5 and 6 inch, double and triple platform shoes, with the heel being no more substantial than a pencil,  the phrase that comes to mind is, “these are an ankle waiting to break.”  I don’t know, maybe I am too cautious, maybe I realize that fifty year old  bones don’t heal like they used to, or maybe I am  just grouchy.  I find myself wearing more wedges, chunkier heels and a lower heel to toe ratio because the stability is greater.  While there were still extreme heels, we saw LOTs of kitten heels on last season’s  runway. Let’s look at some wedges and low heels that will keep me from falling flat on my rump. Stuart Weitzman Bukstrum $335 at Zappos   These are gorgeous.  However Weitzman shoes run narrow and small. Daniblack Ace $105 at Zappos   I would like to see this shoe in person.  It is nothing like I have ever purchased, but it looks fun. Salvatore Ferragamo Flo $495 at Zappos   Another beautiful professional shoe. Christian Louboutan Miss Boxe $625 at Saks.com    Christian Louboutan IS  more than platforms. Ash Wedge Boot  $275 at Saks.com   OK.  The only reason I don’t own these is because they don’t have my size.  They are a little high for my everyday needs, but are they wonderful or what.   I saw this boot in Phoenix, and all I wanted to do is touch it.  The salesguy kept giving me the stink eye. This one is beautiful..  I have told you about one of my high heel embarrassments, tell us one of YOURS! Authentic Shops: Designer Shoes at Zappos.com Saks Fifth Avenue

Mihai Albu’s Over-the-Top Shoe Confections

Have you seen, read,  or heard about Mihai Albu’s architectural shoes ? The styles are, for the most part, imaginative, extreme, crazy, wild, wearable-art pieces. In other words: Statement Shoes. Via the  Mihai Albu website : Mihai Albu TT 103-SW  [1199 RON/$350 USD] * Okay. I know this first shoe isn’t really all that over-the-top or statement-y. But it is available for purchase online, so I thought I’d include it anyway. For the real show-stoppers, I thought I’d leave them as a surprise after the break. Are you ready? The following three styles are also all showing as purchasable via the designer’s official website. The shoes below without links are from the SS 2010 or FW 2010 collections and are viewable via the Mihai Albu website ; although at the time of writing this they do not show at the online boutique. Mihai Albu TT160 [1199 Ron/$350 USD] Mihai Albu DD-Mix [1249 RON/$360] Mihai Albu TT Bijoux [3999 RON/$1155 USD] Sigh, leave it to me to fall for the one pari that I couldn’t afford even in my dreams. I wouldn’t even need an occasion to wear them. I’d just take them out of their box and cradle them like precious children. I wonts let anyone hurts you, My Precious…. Okay,  I’m putting my geek flag away now to show you a mini-gallery of other amazing styles for which I haven’t located retail sources: * Conversion is based on today’s RON:USD rate of approx 1 Ron: 0.29 USD via Coinmill currency calculator. Contact the designer and your local customs office directly for shipping, taxes, fees, and customs rates from Romania/at destination which may apply should you wish to inquire about making a purchase. Chinese Laundry La Di Da Pony Hair Animal Print Peep-toe Pumps

I have been infatuated with Chinese Laundry as of lately, and when I saw these La Di Da pony hair animal print peep-toe pumps , I immediately thought that they would be perfect for Squeak, our fellow resident shoeaholic. Available in Leopard, Giraffe and/or Zebra print with bright color accents. And the best part is that they are currently on sale for only $59.99 (regularly priced at $89) directly from ChineseLaundry.com . There’s nothing like the alluring sight of a wild and exotic animal print that makes a woman dangerous, yet glamorous. The peep toe adds that little touch of femininity and the colorful contrast trim makes these even more attractive. Padded footbed. Pony hair upper. Leather outsole. 3/4″ platform.   Approx. 4 3/4 inch” heel. Not sure how hip I am about the “pony hair” upper, but it’s no different than leather I guess.  I’m sure PETA animal rights activists won’t be buying these animal print pumps, but I still would. And I’m sure Squeak would, too. So now that I’m okay with “pony hair”, I’m not okay with unsightly human hair.  I seriously shave my legs everyday. And if I even feel a prickle, I make sure to wear long pants so no one notices. Maybe I should invest in a Laser Hair Removal System?!  VISS IPL technology prevents hair growth so one can enjoy beautiful, smooth skin everyday.  VISS Beauty is designed for safe and easy use in the comfort of one’s own home.  Cool beans.

Christian Louboutin’s Winter 2010-2011 Line

There is nothing worse than the official Christian Louboutin web site .  All you see are these awful green eyes and floating shoes.  You are supposed to click on this little photo to pull the shoe up.   Terrible.  I used to be all about Christian Louboutin shoes, maybe I am getting old, contrary, or just grouchy, but I didn’t see anything lustilicious. Lots of spikes, lots of studs, lots of metalics, lots of ultra high platforms, lots of over the top.  Whatever. Here is a glimpse of some of the shoes released last week. These shoes do appeal to someone because there are about 200 counterfeit websites. Christian Louboutin released an update to the list of counterfeit sites a couple of weeks ago. So, are any of these lustilicious for you?  Maybe if I look at them long enough, I will change my mind. LaRare by Nathalie Elharrar

If you are a high-heels lover and haven’t yet encountered the fetishistic shoe line LaRare by Nathalie Elharrar you are missing out. With a portfolio that includes work for names such as Balmain, Guy Laroche, Thierry Mugler, and Lagerfeld, this is a designer who already had a large body of work behind her when she released her own shoe line in 2007.  And, by the way, mad props from me right now on her managing to find success with her new business project during what can only be described as one of the more turbulent financial environments the retail world has seen in decades. So many businesses – from the young to the well-established -  floundered or failed over the last few years, that congratulations on the apparent success of the LaRare brand are in order. All that, and I still haven’t managed to show you the shoes yet? How silly of me. Let’s start with my two favorites, the LaRar e ‘Sweety’ tall boots and ‘Sweetbabe’  ankle boots: Inquire on availability via  the LaRare website: listed at €1990 & €700 If you don’t want to call Paris but would like to purchase a pair here in the states, Gregory’s currently carries a handful of LaRare styles . LaRare ‘Vitaly’  $1395 at Gregory’s LaRare ‘Barbarina’ $1195 at Gregory’s LaRare ‘Lady Tiger’ $1395 at Gregory’s LaRare In & Out $1295 at Gregory’s You can also occasionally find styles by LaRare on Farfetch .com. What can I say? These shoes are sinfully sexy.  But what would else would you expect, Nathalie  Elharrar’s LaRare Myspace page is subtitled ‘Elitist Shoes for Shoes Fetishist’ – there’s not a whole lot of ambiguity there….. Unlike the trademark hardware attached at various points (most commonly the outsole arch or back of the heel) of her shoes.  Sure, it could just be me, but  this particular ring detail calls to mind the symbolic Story of ‘O’ finger rings seen in certain quarters of the fetish community. LaRare ‘Priska’ via LaRare.fr website VS. Detail of ‘O’ ring/Story of ‘O’ finger ring via Google images Intentional or unintentional references to fetish shoes aside, it’s not like these shoes actually needed any help to exude sensuality. Slip on a pair of these heels and I have few doubts that you would find yourself instantly channeling your own inner, towering, shoe-goddess….which is not necessarily a bad thing. Other articles/links that may be of interest: The Swelle Life, featuring photos of older styles by LaRare LaRare on Facebook LaRare main website (English language site, as of this writing, several links are broken on the french-language version) Authentic Shops: Designer Shoes at Zappos.com Saks Fifth Avenue

Georgina Goodman’s playful pop of retro-80’s color

If you are young enough to have missed the last round of neon and ultra-brights the last time they visited the fashion scene (not counting the rave/club scene) , you are probably the perfect age to enjoy Georgina Goodman’s colorful and funky shoes. And, with the resurgence of,  guyliner, 80’s reminiscent fashions from leggings to lace & underwear-as-outerwear , puffer vests , and multicolored/ new new wave /emo mullets that would do Flock of Seagulls proud, such brilliant, neon colors feel entirely at home added to the mix. One caution: If you, like me, are old enough to have rocked any (or heaven help us, all) of the above fashions for any length of time during your personal high school or college jaunt through the  80’s, there is a good chance you should not attempt to do the same today. But, if you must imbibe of the fountain of the 80’s, these Georgina Goodman’s are a low-risk way to, rather literally, dip your foot into the water of memory lane….How’s that for painfully mixed metaphors!? Georgina Goodman ‘Harlow’ $289.98 $725 Georgina Goodman ‘Elisha’ $211.98 $530 Georgina Goodman ‘Inga’ $235.98 $590 Georgina Goodman  Rowan $309.98 $776 Georgina Goodman ‘Jackson’ $555 $740 Georgina Goodman ‘Leon’ $920 Georgina Goodman ‘Pierce’ $875 Georgina Goodman ‘Noah’ $581.25 $775 I have to tell you. Those sandals with the color blocks of black, pink, turquoise, and yellow up there? They bring back fond memories of my first real ‘teenager’ outfit. Oh yeah.  This was no hand-me-down -  a common occurrence in a family with 4 older sisters. This outfit had not a single touch of little-kid frou-frou detail on it anywhere; it was just super-cool 1980-something goodness: a black button-down top with a turquoise collar, a just-at-the-knee colorblocked black, pink, and turquoise skirt, a pair of shockingly vibrant turquoise tights, and my first pair of ‘adult’ patent kitten heels with a bow over the vamp. Oh, baby. I had those pumps for years. Oh, yeah, good times & good memories. These Georgina Goodman’s are just waiting to be made into somebody’s current fashion love and future fashion memory. Let the good times start for both young and young-at-heart shoe-lovers. Authentic Shops: Designer Shoes at Zappos.com Saks Fifth Avenue

The Ce Ce Chin ‘Signature’ Collection

Ce Ce Chin is the main creative mind behind 80%20 footwear, a brand I’ve discussed a couple of times this week.  The main 80%20 brand combines casual silhouettes with modern styling that seem perfect for urban gals on the go. These styles are meant to be wardrobe workhorses. In contrast, the recent (April 2010) launch of the Ce Ce Chin collection website is all about classic influences and old-world elegance – all wrapped up in a fabulous  statement-shoe package. Even better is that it’s all been offered at an accessible, if not exactly inexpensive,  price point. Originally revealed at the Project Tradeshow , these shoes are stunners.  The heels were inspired by classic glass perfume bottles and the uppers are made of satins, lace overlays,  and soft leathers. What’s not to love? 80%20 Ce Ce Chin Collection. More styles are available through boutiques whose locations and contact information are available at the Ce Ce Chin website. But, the gorgeous princess oxfords shown above are available at Karmaloop right now – and they are all on sale for under $130 (0riginal retail was around $175-190).  Shoe deals don’t come much better than this. Which leads me to a dirty little confession. I buckled and ordered a pair before I finished writing this post. I apparently didn’t trust that a pair in size 7.5 would be left for me once our readers got their eyes on these. Of course, I might be wrong about that, but why take the chance?
